As I continue my journey with open source technology I realize how much more productive I have become, because small business open source software demands you be productive.
Open Software Applications
Productive vs. Unproductive that Is the question with Ubuntu and the open software applications that I am using. I have found that if I follow the flow of the program I get so much more accomplished.
Productivity from open software is what we all strive to accomplish. The programmers that produce these programs are people that work in the real world. Consequentially they recognize that if programs were created to follow a certain pattern the software would function better. More work gets done easier with less frustration on the part of non-technical individuals that use it.
A good example is the Gnome Bar in the Ubuntu program. Since I have started using this program I realize that the Internet is not my first stop after I boot-up. (By the way boot-up is lightning fast with Ubuntu vs. its subscription alternative.) I then go to the Gnome bar and have organized my icon squares in the logical productive order. I have found that I can get the same amount done in half the time. Hence increased productivity. For me that means more time to write and market my products.
Using the Open Source Community
A trick I learned using OpenOffice.org. I found when I tried to copy and paste an article to a directory site or to send as an attachment to a customer that it was having formatting issues. Solution was to use a text editor, which I got in 2 seconds from an open source programmer Tracy Rooks. Yes I am related to this geek! Actually we are partners in a software company called Liquidlink, Inc. But you don’t need a brother that does this stuff, a lot of what I learn is from the open source community at large. The open source community is made up of programmers and users alike that work and collaborate on the software to help make it the best it can be. Just like the US Marines!
The other trick to solve this is to save it as a .doc file which seems to work as well. But it is so nice to know that there is help at all times when dealing with open source technology unlike the competition, the subscription based boys.
We will continue to post about this adventure to get the word out that small business open source software. It makes sense in any work place.
